Football Review

The weekend fixtures against KCS Wimbledon were affected by the heavy rain last week with everything but the U16A & B cancelled away from home, and the 5th XI and U14D called off at Berkhamsted. Everything else took place on what turned out to be a beautiful Saturday morning.

The U16B won 3-0 with Max, Josh and Robbie scoring the goals. Even on the small compact pitch the team dominated possession and deserved the victory. The U16A carried on their good form winning 2-0. Luke W was once again in the goals scoring twice and earning himself the man of the match accolade. Both teams travel away to Wellington this week for the final match of the term.

At home the U14 teams had a mixed afternoon with both A&C losing, and the B team winning. The Cs were involved in a thriller – 3-0 up at half time the team probably felt the game was won. Unfortunately, the slope of the pitch combined with the high winds saw KCS

Fives Review

The week kicked off with the first of this years’ Nationals competitions in the form of the U15 girl's category on the Wednesday. It was extremely pleasing to see Bethan Miles & Lola Hannah take the win for the 3rd consecutive year in a row, quite a feat that is unlikely to ever be beaten. A full report can be found in the news section.

Thursday saw in double header of fixtures with an away block against Eton for the U14s & U15s while the senior team took on Charterhouse on home courts. The Charterhouse fixture was a good contest with lots of well-balanced matches, but saw Charterhouse come out on top in the majority of them. The Eton fixture ran in a similar vein with all the matches going to the wire but Eton just edging out Berkhamsted in most of the pairs. Some of the highligh matches included our top U15 pairing of Doe & Hubbard playing their rivals who they lost to in last years’ U14 Nationals; they took the first set to stun Eton but then went down in the next three due to some weak set-piece. Our top U14 pair of James & Boylan also shined playing up against a top U15 pair; the game was a four-set thriller with all the games being very close with the exception of the set the Berko boys took where they thumped the Eton boys off court 12 – 1.

On Sunday the U15s also took part in the annual Hughes Cup; this is a three pair team tournament and there were eight teams entered in total split into two pools of four between both Harrow and Eton College. Our side saw two Rydal Penrehos teams (travelling all the way from Wales!) and Harrow. The Berko boys got by both Rydal teams with relative ease but the Harrow v Berko fixture was a real epic. The match was tied with all three pairs drawing in the games so it came down to points difference which Berko won by a single point putting us through in the top-sport position. This places us against Shrewsbury for the semi-finals to be played later in the term.
