What a wonderful day of Fives! Berkhamsted 2nd pair had a tough group including Shrewsbury 2 and Mill Hill 1. After closely fought matches they unfortunately went down in both to finish 3rd in their group of six. Berkhamsted 1, however, enjoyed a smooth path through their group, finishing top.

Next up for Berkhamsted 2 was the Last 16 match against Highgate 1. Both Anna & Ismay played some good competitive Fives, but were unfortunately overpowered by their opposition and therefore qualified for Plate C. Their semi-final Plate C match was a comfortably victory over Mill Hill 2 and set up an excellent final against Ipswich 1. They produced their best Fives of the day to win 12 – 9, 12 – 8.

Lola & Bethan cruised through their quarter-final game against Mill Hill 1 winning 12 – 0, 12 – 1. They were equally destructive in the semi-final beating a competitive Shrewsbury 2 side 12 – 4, 12 – 2. This set was the much-anticipated final against Shrewsbury 1.

After racing to a 6 – 0 lead in the first set, Shrewsbury came back to level at 8 – 8. Lola then produced some inspired volleying on top-step to help claim the first set 12 – 8. The second set was a far simpler affair with Berkhamsted never really being tested, taking the set 12 – 4. The third set saw Shrewsbury come back fighting and it could have gone either way at 8 – 8. However, the Berko girls found the extra gear they needed to win their 3rd consecutive U15 Nationals title.

Many congratulations to the girls and as Nationals organiser Mark Williams stated, “a very rare feat at any level and unlikely to ever be repeated again”. Many thanks to Miss Cresswell for coming along and supporting the girls on this historic day in Berkhamsted Fives history.
