Berkhamsted School U14 A v KCS U14 A 22nd September 2019

Berkhamsted U14 A hosted KCS on Saturday. In training the focus was to improve the mindset of the squad, particularly focusing on being positive with each other and making sure they focus and work hard in each session. It was clear from the offset that both teams were evenly match, with both showing intent to play exciting rugby in perfect conditions. Berkhamsted players carried the ball well in the early stages, in particular Archie, who moved positions from playing on the wing last week to playing Open side Flanker.

What was pleasing with the team performance was the clear intent to get support players closer to the ball carrier and in doing so meaning the ball retention and rucking was quick and effective.

The back three enjoyed having a lot of ball from KCS kicks. The training in the week on counterattack paid off as the counterattack’s was effective with Oscar proving very dangerous, coming close to scoring from one of his elusive runs. From the next play Jack scored from close range with a powerful run.

KCS had a big strong centre who was effective with his ball carrying, scoring two tries and breaking the Berkhamsted defensive line regularly. The team were far more determined with their tackling which meant they stopped the KCS attacks.

Berkhamsted’s intent on moving the ball into the wide areas was proving effective, with some excellent handling from Alex, Jack and Sam in midfield to put Jack and others into space.

Archie was making inroads into the KCS defence every time he ran with the ball, particularly from line-outs. This resulted in him scoring a try from one of these powerful runs and putting Berkhamsted in good attacking positions. Alex also took this opportunity well to score from a change down kick. Jack was enjoying running in the wide-open spaces, scoring two further tries to win the match. The final score 27-20.

Next week the U14’s are at home against Abingdon.

Thank you to the Berkhamsted supporters who came to watch.
