Match Report
Berkhamsted School 1st XV vs  RGS, High Wycombe
On: Saturday, 06 Oct 2018
Venue: at Home

The 1st XV continued their winning run with a superb 39-5 victory over local rivals RGS High Wycombe. This was arguably the team’s best performance in the most difficult of conditions.

Playing into a strong breeze Berkhamsted’s first 20 minutes set the foundations for the remainder of the match with aggressive defence and excellent support play during some physical exchanges. The back row were in excellent form and, along with Jack at hooker, carried the ball superbly. However, the difference between the two attacks was once again the Berkhamsted captain. Josh’s two line breaks were both superb and he was able to link up with his support players to put Berkhamsted two tries up. Nevertheless, RGSHW are tough opponents and converted a spell of pressure into a try of their own. Berkhamsted were not done and a third try just before the break made the score 15-5 and put the hosts in control.

The second half saw Berkhamsted, in the absence of their captain (who was being rested), control the match with good game management and use of the wind behind their backs. Credit to both half backs, Harvey and Jack, who had excellent matches. The family partnership in the mid field also carried superbly and defended with intelligence. Three further tries were just reward for a dominant second half performance and secured the victory. It was superb to see the return of Alex on the wing following his continued bad luck with injuries. A brace of tries will give him great confidence for the remainder of the season. FT 39-5. The 1st XV will go into the second round of the Champions Trophy against Kingswood, Bath on Tuesday full of confidence.
