Match Report
Berkhamsted School 1st XV vs  Abingdon School
On: Saturday, 29 Sep 2018
Venue: Away

This was the 1st XVs toughest test since the opening match of the season and Abingdon played their part in an excellent contest which Berkhamsted won in the closing stages of the match 17-10.

Berkhamsted took an early lead following a quick tap penalty and a good finish in the left hand corner. However, Berkhamsted struggled to exert any control over the game despite dominating the early exchanges and the game was in the balance for the full 70 minutes. Abingdon's defence was superb throughout and they managed to handle nearly everything that Berkhamsted could throw at them. Berkhamsted will be frustrated with themselves when they look back at the footage of the match and will realise that a significant amount of pressure that they had to soak up was down to their own mistakes; the catalyst was often a lack of attention to detail - a wonky throw in the lineout or a error at the scrum. An interception try from the Berkhamsted captain before the interval put the visitors 5-10 ahead but the conversion that followed (a relatively simple one) could have proved crucial.

The second half was a tense affair. Abingdon dominated possession and territory and Berkhamsted really struggled to exert any sort of control. The crucial period of the match came in the fiftieth minute when Berkhamsted defended their own try line for in excess of 10 minutes with 14 men at first and then 13! Although Abingdon eventually crossed the line the Berkhamsted defence was heroic and showed incredible character! When they did eventually concede they forced the try into the corner and the conversion was missed 10-10.

Berkhamsted (with a full compliment of players) came out fighting in the final 7 minutes and strung together several phases of play before the forwards produced quick ball for the captain who spotted half the gap and powered over from 10 metres out! He duly converted the conversion and Berkhamsted survived a final 3 minutes of Abingdon attack to record their first away win of the season. FT 10-17. Congratulations to both teams on an excellent match.
