Fives Review

This week saw two National Competitions in the form of the U13s both girls and boys. Please see the separate reports in the news section on both.

The senior squad then took on QEB in a home fixture on the Tuesday, there were lots of tight close matches which resulted in a satisfying 3 – 3 draw. It was pleasing to see Old Berkhamstedian Oliver O’Gorman settling in at his new job as sports coach and MiC Fives over at QEB leading the opposition Fives team.

Wednesday it was the turn of the juniors with 8 pairs heading over to Highgate; the Berko boys dominated across the fixture, so much so that once the top end pairs had flown through their matches our lower pairs were then bumped up to play better opposition to try and balance the fixture more.

Thursday then saw two away fixtures against both Harrow and Ludgrove. The Harrow fixture saw 8 pairs ranging from U15 – U18 doing battle; it was always going to be a tough fixture with Harrow being one of the top 5s playing schools in the country. Although most of the matches went the way of Harrow it was pleasing to see lots of good close and competitive matches across the board.

The Ludgrove game just saw our top U12 & U13 pairs travel over to play on Ludgrove’s two courts; the U12s had a resounding victory dropping only 3 points across the whole match winning 12 – 1, 12 – 1, 12 – 1. The U13s fixture was a much tighter affair; Kaynama and Baines had always had good battles with these boys in the past and so I t was to be the case again today. They took the first set 12 – 6, always looking in control with some high-quality play throughout. The second set saw the Ludgrove pair adjust their tactics and in a very close game they took the second set 8 – 12. The final set was a humdinger; it was neck and neck all the way right up until 9 – 9. In the end the Ludgrove pair upped a gear whilst the Berko boys made a few unforced errors allowing Ludgrove to take the win 12 – 9. Hopefully this will give Sam & Barney a drive to work hard this next half of term in preparation for the Prep Championships in a few weeks’ time.
