Match Report
Berkhamsted School 2nd XI vs  Abingdon School
On: Saturday, 19 Jan 2019
Venue: Away

After marvelling at the perfectly manicured 1st team pitch, the 2nd xi boys rolled up their sleeves for an attritional affair across the road on a small, muddy pitch against a robust Abingdon outfit. As the tackles flew in, the boys showed an impressive level of grit, character, and discipline to battle against the conditions. Abingdon seemed more attuned to the conditions at first and took an early lead through a set piece. With chances at a premium and passing football harder to come by than an available 5th team player, the boys regrouped impressively at half-time, and were back in the game with a thumping header from Jack W. The boys took the lead as Willem D, freshly recovered from his previous bout of sickness, somehow scuffed the ball into the bottom corner. The win was sealed by Harry N, showing opportunism to latch onto a loose ball, after Will M had been agriculturally hacked down by two Abingdon defenders; this rather characterised the approach of the home side’s defence. This was a very good second-half display, with an excellent performance from the back four who were so dogged that they may have won an award at Crufts.
