Berkhamsted School U14 A v KCS U14 A 22nd September 2018

Berkhamsted U14 A travelled away to KCS in a confident mood after last week's performance against Eton. It was clear from the offset that both teams were evenly match, with both showing intent to play exciting rugby, despite wet conditions. Berkhamsted players carried the ball well in the early stages but two costly mistakes gave KCS an advantage which they capitalized on, scoring two tries.

Berkhamsted came back fighting at the start of the second half, with the forwards running more directly. Berkhamsted’s sustained pressure eventually paid off with Bustamante scoring from close range. Berkhamsted played with confidence and defended well against the bigger KCS team. The KCS back three were a constant threat and after an uncharacteristic missed tackle, KCS scored their third try.

What was most pleasing was the way the team worked together and scored another good try due to Bateson finding a gap in the KCS defence. In the final play of the game KCS scored under the post to make the score 24 – 12.

The boys were disappointed, but many positives came from the game. All the forwards carried the ball well and the defence was more organised. One area the team needs to work on is to ‘Think Clearly Under Pressure’ (T-CUP), particularly when they are close to the oppositions try line.

Thank you to all the supporters who travelled to KCS to watch the U14 A match.
