Match Report
Berkhamsted School 1st XV vs  Eton College
On: Saturday, 15 Sep 2018
Venue: at Home

What an occasion and what a fabulous performance! This was the first outing on the new pitches (a trial run ahead of the official opening next week) and therefore a big occasion following a project that has taken almost two years to complete. The 1st XV did not disappoint and put in a second half performance to remember and recorded a 54-15 victory against Eton.

However, Berkhamsted did not have it all their own way in the first half and I am certain that on reflection the 1st XV will be slightly disappointed with their first half performance. They were once again guilty of over playing and forcing the odd off load or 50/50 pass which resulted in them surrendering possession and subsequently territory and finding themselves back where they started. Berkhamsted were able to convert some of their territory into points and crossed the line twice, however, it will be no surprise that the overriding message at half time was the need to remain patient and stringing together some passages of play. To their credit Eton played their part in disrupting the Berkhamsted patterns of play with resilient defence and great work ethic. In fact, they also offered a threat in attack on numerous occasions and Berkhamsted had to work hard to defend their own line. HT 12-3.

The second half was a different story as Berkhamsted scored six tries and the captain lit up the match with a superb individual performance which included a hat trick and 29 individual points. Eton scored two tries of their own but it was all Berkhamsted from start to finish. The 1st XV used their possession to great affect and as they grew in confidence started to attack from all over the park, utilising their off loading game, dominating the break down and finishing superbly. Following a frustrating couple of matches it was a taste of what this team are capable of, and with their captain in such great form, others around them showed their potential and it in some outstanding performances. I am certain that everyone watching will be looking forward to the remainder of the season. Final score Berkhamsted 54 Eton 15, congratulations to the boys.
